COOLING AND HEATING WITH NATURAL COOLANT CO2

Air conditioning systems operate with easily vaporized liquids, so-called coolants. Unfortunately, many of these coolants – classified according to their GWP (Global Warming Potential) value – are still harmful to the climate. The higher the GWP value, the more harmful is the corresponding coolant. For example, our highly energyefficient REVO®-E HP R744 rooftop air conditioner runs on coolant CO2 (R744) with a GWP = 1, and the greenhouse potential of the coolant is minimized. In addition, coolant leaks have been reduced to a minimum with hermetically sealed pipework.

The green house gas CO2 is produced during every combustion process, together with further harmful exhaust components and soot particles. Based on intensive research activities, Valeo's conventional, diesel-powered heaters are already below legally required emission values of the EURO 6 emissions standard in stationary operation. Gas-powered Spheros heaters are also soot-free and emit even less CO2, CO and NOx. Furthermore, we are conducting intensive research on innovative use of alternative fuels from non-fossil energy sources, e.g. HVO, GtL, BtL and e-fuels. Our heaters have already been approved for some of these fuels, and subject to certain conditions their operation is climate-neutral

ENTELLIGENCE - Holistic thermal management of the entire system

Intelligence and thermal management are crucially important in the control of all components for optimum bus climate. Intelligent software is a fundamental requirement for the efficient, error-free management of component hardware. In climate control of the future, a large number of extremely complex components and operating states of the vehicle will be read out and applied. For us, this demanding type of thermal management is the central task of modern bus air conditioning, today and in the future.

We call this holistic approach of clean and efficient air conditioning of hybrid and electrobuses „Entelligence“.

DEVELOPMENT AND TEST CENTRE

Each innovation is put through its paces at the development and test centre in Gilching, Germany, where a large climatic chamber for overall system tests and numerous component test facilities, together with values obtained from the company's two test buses, provide information on the function and reliability of the air conditioning systems. Whereas air conditioning systems are tested at Gilching and the Spheros plant at Caxias do Sul, Brazil, there are further test centres for heaters, pumps and components in Neubrandenburg, Germany, and for hatch systems in Turku, Finland

Responsible use of energy and raw materials are also core issues for our customers. Aspects such as energy efficiency, fuel consumption and system weight are increasingly crucial for gaining customer orders.
